    AT THE HELM

It's around six forty five, and most of the crew have donned sweatshirts as we tack in toward the shoreline just past Hector Falls. The air is filled with pockets of warm, moist air from the deep blue waters of Seneca Lake, and the western sky is scored with streaks of pink and purple. The color-laden tree line on the eastern shore becomes a silhouette as the last rays of sun struggle to stay above the horizon. I rest against the forward mast and watch the faces of passengers. Some apprehensive smiles appear as Malabar X slices through the waves at nearly ten knots railing in on the port side and soaking the scuppers.

I wink at the Indy Racing League's photo team and say, "don't worry we have twenty thousand pounds of iron on the bottom. She won't roll over!" They chuckle and resume shooting beautiful sunset pictures over the bowsprit. We come about and head south. I resume my duties as Hazlitt wine steward and "rookie" Malabar crewmate. If there is a better working environment, you'd have a hard time convincing me. And most of our charter passengers agree. A fall foliage cruise onboard Malabar X is a memory of a lifetime! Malabar X continues daily charters from the Watkins Glen pier until October 16th.
